With a triathlon and a long swim to do before the summer sun is at its peak, it is always an early start for the Salty Sea Dog Events.
The second Salty Sea Dog Triathlon of the summer was a great success with a full start line for the sea swim at 7am this morning. With the sun rising over Boscombe Pier the triathletes kicked off the Sprint and Super Sprint together on the sand; heading into 20*C water for the first leg of the event.
Within six minutes we had our first competitors out of the water, completing their 375m Super Sprint swim with the top time of just 5 minutes 47 seconds going to Zac Cloete, 15, who also raced in July when he won the Super Sprint category. While the Super Sprint is home to some fierce competition, it is also a great distance for novice triathletes, as newcomer Lloyd Scott found. With only 14 hours notice he stepped up to fill another’s shoes and with very little preparation he joined his wife Sophie in the Super Sprint finishing in well under an hour. Sophie’s sister was also competing and it would seem there was some hot sisterly rivalry underway, with Emily Boyd having completed marathons in the past. With a fantastic time putting him in 1st place was Wayne Thursting who completed our Super Sprint in just 37 minutes 33 seconds.
After just ten minutes, we had Sprinters coming up the beach too, with the lead held by Elliot Wilks. While it was a close run thing, Elliot was pipped in the next stages by Paul Ryman who had a great cycle and run, coming in with a Sprint win of 1 hour 6 minutes 56 second. One of our regular eventers Vincent Cook of the Lymington Triathlon Club and Vegan Runners, also completed the Sprint, with some great advice for newcomers: Don’t hesitate. He wishes he’d begun competing in our challenges sooner, but he’s glad he overcame his fears and got involved as he absolutely loves his training sessions and the events he does every year.
Next up are the Long Swimmers, with the 2.5km and the 3.8km sea swims. Several competitors already had the tri under their belts at registration for the Long Swim including Jessica Fitzwarren from Lymington Triathlon Club, who won 1st place in the 2.5km for the women with a time of 40 minutes and 52 seconds, and 4th overall. With the water temperature well above 18*C many of the swimmers were on the start in just their swimming costumes. Some weren’t in the water long enough to even feel the chill though with our winners coming in with fantastic times; Owen Davies completed the 2.5km in just 33 minutes 33 seconds and Emily Clarke the 3.8km in 49 minutes and 36 seconds.
